Saudis protest after teen’s death
August 05, 2012
Protesters have demonstrated in Saudi Arabia, condemning the regime’s brutality after the police killed a teenager in the Qatif city of the oil-rich Eastern Province.
Anti-regime protesters staged overnight rallies on Saturday in Qatif after 18-year-old Hussain Yousef al-Qallaf died of his injuries, a day after being shot in the chest by security forces.
According to the Saudi Interior Ministry, Hussain Yousef al-Qallaf was among a number of young protesters, who clashed with regime forces in the city on Friday.
The Saudi authorities also say one policeman was also killed in the confrontation.
Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich Eastern Province has been witnessing growing anti-monarchy sentiment.
In a demonstration on Friday, protesters demanded the release of teenage activist Muhammad al-Shakhouri and other political activists.
Shakhouri was injured and arrested on July 27 and now is in a military hospital in the city of Dhahran.
The Saudi authorities say Shakhouri has been among the 23 most wanted men in Qatif. He was protesting the detention of prominent cleric Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr when he was detained.
Sheikh Nemr was injured and arrested by Saudi security forces of the Al Saud regime, while driving from a farm to his house in Qatif on July 8.
At least 12 people have been killed in the regime’s crackdown on protesters. The peaceful demonstrators are demanding social justice and an end to systematic discrimination.
