I was just reading the article and discussion about the Arabic equivalent of the word gay. It really is not Steve Clemons’ position as someone who isn’t an Arabic speaker to discuss this matter and imply Arabic is not progressive like English. Let us not give credit to subtle racism about non-white cultures and the misogyny in his article. We do have a word for homosexuality but the connotations are very negative and it is used as a major insult. It is possible that a large population of men will want to reclaim it. Language is always subject to change. Arabic speakers from very different cultures are creating and will continue to create their own language inclusive of non-hetero individuals to be used if wanted. White people need to step back and stop forcing upon our ethnic communities their definition of LGBTQ+ pride and support. What is right for Europeans is not necessarily right for people of colour. Go away.
